Shoni and Jude Schimmel: Why they kick ass

Shoni and Jude Schimmel are are indispensable members for The Louisville Cardinal women’s basketball team, and are also tribal members of the Confederated Tribe of Umatilla Indians. They are also the only American Indians to ever play in a NCAA Division 1 basketball title game.

When she was a junior in high school, Shoni was the subject of a documentary entitled Off the Rez, as she attempted to become the first from her reservation to gain an athletic scholarship. she succeeded, and her sister followed in her footsteps, even winning the Elite 89 award earlier in the tournament, a distinction given to the top student-athlete participating at each NCAA championship site.

They’ve become inspirations to thousands around the country, while only three years ago Shoni and Jude were budding superstars at Franklin High School in Southeast Portland; two teenagers with flash and flair who left the reservation and talked about setting a positive example for young Natives.

Shoni and Jude commanded attention throughout the tournament, leading Louisville to a shocking win over No. 1 Baylor, considered the biggest upset in tournament history. ESPN showed pictures of a young Shoni and Jude in full tribal wear, as fans across the country became familiar with their backstory.

The fifth-seeded Cardinals were the lowest seed in history to play in a title game and with most of their players back, they will be a Top 5 team next season. “Without a doubt, this is going down as one of the greatest runs in women’s basketball,”

Photo from World War II Database

Hazel Lee was one of the first Chinese American women to obtain a pilot’s license in America and the first to fly for the U.S. Military. Lee was a member of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) and flew during World War II.

I love reading about female pilots from the early twentieth century. There were so many restrictions placed on women during that time. That women like Hazel Lee were flying through the air completely free - doing what the guys were doing- is completely inspiring.

Information from Wikipedia and HazelYingLee.com

You can find this issue at most book stores across Canada or subscribe here.

Check out the letter from our editor, Sheila:

“I can’t remember the first time someone told me that “life isn’t fair,” but I know that I’ve heard it too many times to count. It’s hard to remember a month in my adult life where I haven’t had it said to me, and, in the process of sitting down to write this letter, I realize that it’s entirely likely a month hasn’t gone by when I haven’t said it to someone else.

When I reflect on these three words and unpack their implications, I can’t help but feel uncomfortable with how many of us talk about fairness and how we understand our relationship to justice. “Life isn’t fair,” means that we understand right and wrong, that we understand justice, but that we have also grown to accept the sad reality that our day-to-day lives are often affected in ways that are inconsistent with these values. The statement suggests a push for complacency and acceptance, because that’s just how things work.

I am tired of hearing these words. I am tired of saying them, too. Yes, life isn’t fair, but also: yes, it should be. And: yes, we can imagine a fairer world when those three words are used to start a conversation, not end one.

We hope to start that conversation with this issue of Shameless. In it, we ask important questions about our justice system and whose interests it serves (p. 18), we advocate to replace systems of punishment with those of community-led restoration and healing (p.28), and we provide a breakdown of how to affect the laws that affect us (p. 24). We challenge the policing of our classrooms (p. 10), our bodies (p. 13) and our closets (p.40), and we explore justice as it relates to the environment (p. 16) and our access to food (p. 38). With this issue, we hope to start a conversation about justice that can be used to challenge a culture of complacency and, in turn, fight for a fair and just world.

Yours Shamelessly,
Sheila
sheila@shamelessmag.com “

strugglingtobeheard:

These public exhibits of humans, often called Negro Villages, usually showed indigenous people in a so-called natural or primitive state. The displays often emphasized the cultural differences between Europeans of Western civilization and non-European peoples.

Above is a photo from Amsterdam Holland around 1890, of an African child in one of these Human Zoo exhibits, being fed like an animal by white spectators.

Most of these “neighborhoods” are discussed more in depth in the Racism: A History series that can be found for free on YouTube which was ironically done by the BBC.

Alvina has two grannies: Grannie Vero from Trinidad and Grannie Rose from England. When Alvina’s parents go on vacation, both grannies arrive to look after Alvina. But the two grannies have two very different ideas about what to eat, what to play, even what stories to tell. The grannies get angrier and angrier with each other, but Alvina devises a plan so that each granny can have her own way — or so she hopes! This sweet, funny story about tolerance and understanding reminds children that no matter how great the differences may seem, there’s always room for common ground.

Documentary — The Eyes of the Rainbow (1997)

“Eyes of the Rainbow” deals with the life of Assata Shakur, the Black Panther and Black Liberation Army leader who escaped from prison and was given political asylum in Cuba, where she has lived for close to 15 years. In it we visit with Assata in Havana and she tells us about her history and her life in Cuba. This film is also about Assata’s AfroCuban context, including the Yoruba Orisha Oya, goddess of the ancestors, of war, of the cemetery and of the rainbow. Gloria Rolando on “Eyes of the Rainbow”:

“In the struggle of the African American people, many women’s voices in the past and the present have always called for social justice, women who throughout the years have shown integrity and firmness in their principles. For this reason, “The Eyes of the Rainbow” is dedicated to all women who struggle for a better world.

One of those voices that already forms a part of the history of the African American people is that of Assata Shakur. In the documentary “The Eyes of the Rainbow,” she recounts aspects of her path as relentless warrior. We are able to create a meeting with Assata Shakur through the symbols of AfroCuban culture, which offer us beautiful songs evoking the ancestors.

Representations of the Yoruba warrior orishas such as Oya and Ochosi support the discourse of this story, which also has its moments of poetry and tenderness as in the dance of Oshun, through which is illustrated Assata’s decision to become mother while still in prison.

The blues interpreted by Junius Williams and his “Magic Harp,” the songs of Sweet Honey in the Rocks, and the Cuban group “Vocal Baobab” give a special stamp to this valiant testimony which defines the spirit of struggle in the African American woman.”
